Super Bowl XLVIII was the championship football game between the Seattle Seahawks and the Denver Broncos. In this game, the Seahawks would represent the National Football Conference as its champion while the Denver Broncos would represent the American Football Conference. Both teams were coming off great seasons where they were among the most dominant teams in the league.
With this matchup, the Seattle Seahawks were a very strong defensive team while the Broncos were known for their high scoring offense. The two teams were lead by all pro quarterbacks Russell Wilson of the Seahawks and Peyton Manning of the Broncos. Despite this being a very appealing matchup, with the Denver Broncos favored by 2 points, the game was a blowout as the Seattle Seahawks easily won the game by a score of 43-8. Can they do it again this year? In my 2016 season preview I think there is a chance.
The game was played at Metlife Stadium in the first cold weather city in Super Bowl history. According to weather experts, a snowstorm was expected to hit the area during the game which caused some controversy. However, the snowstorm never occurred and both teams were able to play the game in nearly perfect conditions. This game was broadcast worldwide on the FOX station with Joe Buck and Troy Aikman.
In the first quarter, the Seattle Seahawks would establish their dominance of the game with their defense. The Seahawks scored on a fumble recovery in the Broncos endzone which resulted in a safety to give Seattle a 2—0 lead. After getting a couple of defensive stops, the Seahawks would then score six more points on two field goals to jump out to an 8-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Seahawks would have a couple of decent scoring drives in the first quarter but were unable to score a touchdown. Meanwhile, the Denver Broncos were unable to make any progress in scoring points due to Seattle’s stifling defense.
The second quarter would be very similar to the first with Seattle shutting down the Broncos with their defense and scoring more points to increase their lead. The Seahawks would score a touchdown on a 1 yard running play by their halfback Marshawh Lynch. Then the Seahawks would score another touchdown on an interception return of 69 yards. After these two scoring plays, the Seahawks were leading 22-0 and in firm control of the game. Denver was still unable to get anything going on offense and by halftime, it looked like Seattle was going to easily win this game.
At the beginning of the third quarter, the Seahawks would score another touchdown on a kickoff return. Kick returner Harvin would run back the second half kickoff 87 yards to extend Seattle’s lead of 29-0. Then at the end of the third quarter, Russel Wilson would throw a touchdown pass of 23 yards to give the Seahawks a lead of 36-0. However, the Denver Broncos were finally able to get on the scoreboard as Peyton Manning threw a 14 yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Denarius Thomas and a two point conversion pass to receiver Wes Welker to make the score 36-8 at the end of the third quarter.
